Richard Sherman will make an attempt to avoid surgery on his injured left elbow.
NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Monday that Dr. James Andrews has advised Sherman to try and let his elbow heal on its own, rather than have the surgery, according to team sources. Sherman will undergo another examination on the elbow in a month. FOX Sports 1's Mike Garafolo had the first report on Sherman's treatment plan.
The news continues a change of course from Pete Carroll. The Seahawks coach initially said last week that Sherman would require Tommy John ligament replacement surgery to repair the elbow -- injured on a collision with teammate Kam Chancellor during the NFC Championship Game -- before saying the procedure could be avoided.
Sherman played through the injury in the Super Bowl, finishing with three tackles in the narrow loss to the Patriots.
The Seahawks' secondary was decimated with injuries by the end of the season. Safety Earl Thomas is expected to undergo surgery to repair a shoulder injury suffered in the NFC title game. Chancellor played through a torn MCL in the Super Bowl and cornerback Jeremy Lane suffered a compound fracture of his arm during an interception return against the Pats.
