Tommy Cutlets didn’t make the cut.
Fan favorite Tommy DeVito, the only quarterback who entered the 2025 preseason with past experience on the New York Giants roster, was waived by Big Blue on Tuesday, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported, per sources. New York later made the news official.
With 10-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson pegged as the Giants’ starter, fellow veteran free-agent addition Jameis Winston listed as No. 2 on the depth chart and rookie first-round draft choice Jaxson Dart having turned in a stellar preseason, DeVito was the odd man out.
It’s rare for teams to carry four quarterbacks on a 53-man roster, so DeVito’s release isn’t all that surprising. It also wouldn’t be a surprise if he rejoins New York on the practice squad if he isn’t picked up by another team.
If Thursday's preseason finale against the New England Patriots was DeVito's last showing with the G-Men, it was a memorable exit. DeVito threw for three touchdowns in the Giants' 42-10 win, completing 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards.
A New Jersey native who was an undrafted free agent out of Illinois following four seasons at Syracuse, DeVito infused some fun into a woebegone 2023 Giants squad and garnered headlines when he quarterbacked New York to three straight wins during a 6-11 campaign.
Those three wins tied for the most by a rookie UDFA in the NFL’s common draft era. In the final game of that stretch, DeVito was lauded as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after he led a game-winning field goal drive for a 24-22 Monday night win over the Green Bay Packers.
After filling in for Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor in 2023, DeVito returned last season and made three appearances with a pair of starts after Jones was benched.
DeVito, 27, has completed 145 of 222 passes (65.3%) in two seasons for 1,358 passing yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
For a few weeks in 2023, he was a feel-good underdog story during a tumultuous time for the Giants. He returned in 2024 to diminished results and production. Heading into 2025, he was a longshot to make the 53-man roster and didn’t overcome the odds.
DeVito could be back with Big Blue by Wednesday or he could find a new squad. For now, though, Tommy Cutlets’ time with Big Blue -- entertaining as it was during some trying times -- has come to a close.
