One of the better stories in college football, Ogbonnaya finally got his chance to shine after Jamaal Charles declared for the 2008 draft. He entered his senior season having carried the ball only 66 times in three years and switching from tailback to receiver and back multiple times.
In Texas' Colt McCoy-driven offense (the quarterback was the leading passer and rusher), Ogbonnaya only managed 73 rushes for 373 yards and four scores n 2008, but his 46 catches for 540 yards and three touchdowns also caught scouts' eyes. His play on coverage units also makes him a draft-able prospect. Had an arm span of 31 5/8 inches and a hand span of 9 7/8 inches at the combine.

And play he did, as Williams rushed for 4,329 yards and 42 touchdowns while averaging almost 15 catches for 222 yards per season as a four-year starter. Although he lacks elite 40-yard dash times (an overrated measure for most running backs), the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year is a legitimate mid-round prospect because of his size and underrated quickness as an inside runner. A former walk-on, Fanaika has used his unique combination of size, surprising foot quickness and determination to develop into one of the better, more underrated interior linemen in the country. Fanaika has intriguing upside for the next level -- if scouts can find a place for him. Despite starting three years at right guard for the Sun Devils, Fanaika's struggles with leverage could pose problems against shorter, powerful defensive tackles. There are some who believe Fanaika's future lies at right tackle, where his size and arm length could be beneficial, but with questionable lateral quickness and no experience outside, it is a projection likely only worthy of a late-round pick. The Dolphins took a big corner in Vontae Davis, something they'll need with Terrell Owens and Randy Moss in the division. Davis had some questions surrounding him but Bill Parcells and his staff will make sure he tows the line. The second-round selection of Pat White screams that the Wildcat is going to be expanded and that spells trouble for opponents. Sean Smith reminds Parcells of Albert Lewis and, as always, he looks for players that remind him of former greats. The selection of big wide receiver Patrick Turner in the third round will give the team a presence in the red zone. They still need to find a young nose tackle to complete a good year's work.

Nolan was forced to redshirt in 2006 after suffering a knee injury in only his third practice with the Sun Devils. Returned to the field in 2007, when he left little doubt about his athleticism, starting all 13 games and leading the team with six interceptions -- two of which he returned for a touchdown. Nolan's propensity for making the big play showed up again in 2008, as he picked off another four passes and returned two of them (along with a fumble) to give him five defensive touchdowns in only two seasons of Pac-10 play. If he can improve on his marginal 40 time, Nolan could emerge as one of the hotter safety prospects in this draft.

The Broncos shocked a lot of people when they selected RB Knowshon Moreno after signing three running backs in free agency. On top of the surplus of runners is the need to build a 3-4 defense from the floor up. The team's biggest issues are in the front seven and despite getting a legitimate player in DE Robert Ayers, they may be two years away from a true 3-4 defense. They still need a nose tackle and a big inside linebacker. The two defensive backs picked in the second round -- Alphonso Smith and Darcel McBath -- raised some eyebrows, especially when they gave away a first-round pick next year to get Smith. That's only setting the time table back to construct a 3-4.

Mickens plays with the legitimate speed and burst to the ball to force opposing quarterbacks to think twice before challenging his side of the field. There are concerns, however, about his pure speed. A medical check is required after he had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in November, although he did play pretty well at less than full strength in the Orange Bowl.

His 42 catches for 714 yards and nine touchdowns in 2008 would have increased if not for a grotesquely dislocated elbow injury suffered against Kansas. Given his tough play on the field and work ethic in practice, it was no surprise when he returned with a brace after missing only one game. Played sparingly behind Erin Henderson at weak-side linebacker in 2006, but switched to the strong side in 2007 and started the next two years there, registering 84 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles in 2007 and emerging as the only ACC defender to record more than 75 tackles (77) and five sacks on the year. Despite his experience there, lacks the bulk scouts prefer, but his athleticism and secure tackling make him a potential immediate special teamer and an intriguing developmental prospect for the weakside.

Bill Belichick loves the second round and has no interest in a high-priced first-round player that will upset the chemistry in his locker room. The Patriots used four picks in the second round and parlayed other picks into two additional second-round picks next year. Coach Belichick considers Patrick Chung is a very bright safety who makes the calls and adjustments, and third-round linebacker Tyrone McKenzie has played in so many systems that he can eventually help out at all the linebacker spots. Ron Brace, the Boston College nose tackle, may leverage the club against the contract demands of Vince Wilfork down the road. It will be tough for 12 draft picks to make this Patriots team, but they should also have a very good practice squad. They may still be in the market for a veteran outside pass rusher.

For his first two years in Corvallis, Stroughter was primarily a return specialist. That all changed in 2006, as he accumulated 1,293 yards on 74 receptions -- and still managed to score three touchdowns on punt returns.
Unfortunately, he could not follow up that second-team All-Pac-10 performance in 2007 due to his battle with depression and a lacerated kidney. He came back from that redshirt season with a vengeance as a senior, earning first-team all-conference accolades by catching 70 passes for 1,040 yards and seven scores.
Stroughter's combination of receiving and return skills could land him a spot on an NFL roster in 2009. Had an arm span of 29 1/2 inches and a hand span of 9 inches at the combine.

A punishing hitter, Follett capitalized on Cal's switch to the 3-4 defense to post the best numbers of his career as a senior, registering an eye-popping 23 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks and forcing five fumbles. Considering the success he enjoyed while operating on the strong side in 2007, when Cal was in the 4-3 alignment, Follett is clearly not just a product of the system. In '07, his first season as a full-time starter, Follett earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors in leading Cal with 12.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks despite missing two games. One of the more physical and intense defenders in the country, the knock on Follett is the perception that he's best going forward and may be too stiff in coverage for some schemes.

It was a bumpy ride for Jean-Francois in Baton Rouge. One of the top high school recruits in the country, he contributed as a freshman in 2006 (5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks) after a redshirt season in 2005. He missed the first 12 games due to academic problems as a sophomore, then won defensive MVP honor in the national title game against Ohio State after making six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and blocking a field goal. His junior season was also adversity-filled. He started only six of 11 games in which he played due to a groin injury and the deep, talented LSU line. He's been exceptionally durable, starting 51 straight games during his career. His production dropped a bit this season (87 tackles, one for loss, two INTs), but his blend of size and speed could be enough to make him a top-75 pick.

A heavily-recruited high school defensive end who quickly made the move to offense, Morrah capitalized on an impressive junior season to declare early for the NFL Draft. As the primary backup behind current Tennessee Titan tight end Craig Stevens in 2007, Morrah caught 13 passes for 155 yards and a score in 2007.
After Stevens moved on to the next level, Morrah emerged as one of the best red-zone weapons in the country, scoring eight touchdowns on only 27 receptions. Morrah's decision to leave early was a bit surprising, considering how raw he remains as a blocker, but his size and athletic ability will likely assure him of earning a draft selection - even if it is during the middle to late rounds. Had an arm span of 33 1/2 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.

But like most of the rest of the Rutgers team, his stock fell early in 2008 because of inconsistent play. The Gronkowski family is full of athletes. Dan is one of five brothers, including the Arizona Wildcats' Chris and Rob (a junior who earned consensus All-Pac-10 accolades in 2008). Their father, Gordie Sr., played on the offensive line at Syracuse. Dan's older brother, Chris, played three years in the California Angels organization.
Despite starting 17 games in 2006-07, Gronkowski was primarily used as a blocker early in his career, catching only 11 passes for 114 yards during that time. Though his senior numbers were far from eye-popping (29-287-3), scouts felt he emerged in 2008 and league coaches agreed, awarding him honorable mention All-ACC honors.
Gronkowksi's size, blocking skills and ability to move the chains could make him a solid reserve tight end in the NFL. Had an arm span of 34 1/2 inches and a hand span of 10 1/2 inches at the combine.

So many needs and not enough quality picks. Defensive end Tyson Jackson was a good start and reminds Scott Pioli of Richard Seymour, the guy they built the Patriots defense around. Defensive tackle Alex Magee looked good at the Senior Bowl and should get some work in a rotation at defensive end, but they still need pass rushers. After minicamps, we may see a deal for a veteran.
