A three-time AP All-American, Laurinaitis is the most recognized player in the 2009 draft. Blessed with a rare combination of size and athleticism -- drawing comparison to Bears Pro Bowl MLB Brian Urlacher -- Laurinaitis burst onto the scene as a sophomore, earning the 2006 Bronko Nagurski Award (top defensive player). He won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker and the Lott Trophy in '08 as the nation's best all-around defensive player. Despite his gaudy statistics (366 career tackles) and unrivaled trophy room, there are elements to Laurinaitis' game that concern scouts. The value of his reliability and consistency can't be overstated. Laurinaitis is viewed by many as the safest pick of the 2009 draft.

It's no surprise this Buckeye appears to have very good knowledge of the game, being the son of long-time NFL player and coach Terry Robiskie. While Brian Robiskie has the reliable route-running and hands one might expect considering his father's tutelage, he has built his own reputation as a surprisingly fluid athlete for a prospect of his size.
Robiskie took a major step in his climb from special teams ace as a freshman to star receiver in 2007 when he caught 55 catches for 935 yards (17.0-yard avg.) and 11 touchdowns in his junior season. His production as a senior declined (42-535-8) due to changes in Ohio State's offense, but a solid week of practice at the Senior Bowl reassured scouts that Robiskie, while not the game-breaker of some of his peers, may be the most NFL-ready receiver of the 2009 draft. Had an arm span of 31 1/2 inches and a hand span of 9 5/8 inches at the combine.

While Ohio State's Malcolm Jenkins deserves the recognition he has received as the top senior cornerback in the country, Smith might just be the most underrated. What Smith lacks in size, he more than makes up for in pure athleticism, demonstrating the quick feet and straight-line speed to cover any receiver in the country.
Just as important, Smith is fearless on the field, routinely coming up to support the run. A natural playmaker, Smith left Wake Forest as the ACC's career leader with 21 interceptions. This penchant for the big play translated onto the practice field at the Senior Bowl, where Smith intercepted passes in front of hundreds of scouts on each of the first three days of work.
As dynamic a playmaker as Smith is, however, the reality is there are very few 5-foot-9 cornerbacks starting in the NFL. Smith's small stature could push him far enough down the board to the point where he is ultimately a steal.

A more consistent playmaker than Keith Rivers -- selected 10th overall by the Bengals in 2008 -- Maualuga might be the most explosive hitter in the draft. Blessed with a prototypical combination of size and athleticism, Maualuga has the speed to beat the running back wide and the bulk to be a punisher on the inside. Maualuga impressed scouts with his ability to rush the passer during drills at the Senior Bowl and delivered six sacks as a junior (zero as a senior). His penchant for big plays in coverage make him one of the few inside linebackers of this class capable of playing all three downs. A three-time all-conference selection and 2009 All-American, Maualuga is a difference-maker worthy of a top-20 selection in the 2009 draft.

The spread attack is often characterized as a finesse offense. With the massive Britton operating at left tackle for the Wildcats, physicality in the running game was the key to U of A's success. The spread attack and mobile senior quarterback Willie Tuitama help mask Britton's lack of elite foot speed and agility as a pass blocker, but his size and strength in the running game could make him a standout at right tackle or even inside at guard in a drive-blocking scheme. Scouts love his physicality and consistency. After redshirting in 2005, Britton started the next consecutive 37 games and earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors as a left tackle in 2008. Teammate BJ Raji received more attention than Brace, who is a stout run defender in his own right. A second-team All-ACC selection in 2008 after earning honorable mention in 2007 -- when Raji was academically ineligible -- Brace isn't going to provide much in terms of statistical production. In fact, Brace's combined statistics from his two all-conference seasons led to numbers that some of the other highly ranked defensive tackles enjoyed in just one season: 54 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Brace might lack name recognition and explosive burst, but his stout frame, lower-body strength and versatility could make him a mid-round value come draft day.

Even with Connecticut's ascent as a prominent program, the number of players the program is producing might be surprising to those outside the conference. While running back Donald Brown is a known prospect, Butler is likely to be the first UConn player drafted in 2009, despite the fact that he missed the team's final two regular-season games with a knee injury. The four-year starter and two-year captain is athletic enough to project to a man or zone scheme and answered scouts' concerns about his recovery with a strong week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Butler wasn't often challenged in 2008 and he finished without an interception. Conference coaches elected the versatile playmaker a first-team all-conference selection and Butler has proven his takeaway ability in the past, recording 10 interceptions over his first three seasons. Butler's uncle, Gene Atkins, played in the NFL and his cousin is Baltimore Ravens' running back Willis McGahee.

An all-conference choice after each of his three seasons at Oregon, Jairus Byrd finished only one interception short of the school record. Five of his career 17 interceptions came in 2008, helping Byrd to earn first-team All-Pac-10 accolades two seasons after earning the conference co-Freshman of the Year honors (along with USC safety Taylor Mays and UCLA cornerback Alterraun Verner). A natural playmaker whose versatility as a punt returner could mean an immediate impact at the next level, Byrd is only a workout away from emerging as a legitimate first-day -- perhaps first-round -- prospect.

With apologies to 1980's West Virginia QB Major Harris, many consider White to be the best player ever to suit up in Morgantown. He was the first quarterback in the history of college football to start, set an all-time rushing record for quarterbacks and won everything from All-American honors to Big East Offensive Player of the Year (twice) and three bowl game MVPs. Teams will have to decide where he fits in the NFL before making him a top 75 selection, however. Does he have the size and skills to play quarterback? Some scouts think he has earned the right to try with his 2008 performance (1,842 yards passing, 65.7 completion percentage, 21 touchdowns vs. seven interceptions). Or does he have the hands to switch to receiver? There is no question about his speed, toughness or leadership abilities, however. He'll get a shot somewhere, somehow. Even after finishing second only to Florida State's Everette Brown with 13 sacks on the season -- and leading the entire country in sacks by a linebacker -- Sintim earned second-team All-ACC accolades. NFL scouts appreciate Sintim's unique skill set. While not fluid enough to project as well in the 4-3, Sintim's burst upfield as a rush linebacker make him a first-day possibility for 3-4 defenses.

Al Davis still calls the shots in Oakland and that will not change. People have criticized the Raiders for taking WR Darrius Heyward-Bey too early and then selecting Mike Mitchell in the second round, a safety that many had as a second-day pick. Heyward-Bey gives the Raiders a deep threat and they have the quarterback in JaMarcus Russell to get it to him off the play-action fake to Darren McFadden. The Raiders still need to pick up a left tackle if one becomes available. Levi Jones could help this situation if he is cut by Cincinnati.

At 6-8 and nearing 350 pounds, Loadholt is aptly named and has the size, strength and flexibility to be a dominant drive blocker in the running game. A left tackle for the Sooners, Loadholt does not possess the initial quickness needed to remain at this critical position in the NFL. With a deep enough kick-slide to move to right tackle to go along with dominance in the running game, Loadholt has early-round potential. Originally signed with USC out of high school in 2003, but Moala did not qualify academically and instead attended Cypress Junior College before transferring back to USC in 2004. Was since a consistent member of the Trojans' defensive line rotation, starting every game for the Trojans over the past two seasons and 38 games overall. A more valuable contributor than his yearly average production (26 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks) would indicate, Moala isn't going to fill the stat sheet, but his presence inside forced opponents to double-team him often, opening up opportunities for his playmaking teammates.

He spent two years on a LDS mission after his 2004 redshirt season and is older than most players in this class. Kruger made first-team All-Mountain West in 2008 with 61 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and seven pass breakups. Survived a knife attack during a fight outside a party in January 2008, during which he came to the aid of a friend. Had a kidney removed after a childhood car accident. His father, Paul, played football at Oregon State. Kruger's potential is very exciting for scouts who must decide whether he can fill out his frame at his relatively advanced age or will play defensive end or stand up in a 3-4 scheme.

Bill Belichick loves the second round and has no interest in a high-priced first-round player that will upset the chemistry in his locker room. The Patriots used four picks in the second round and parlayed other picks into two additional second-round picks next year. Coach Belichick considers Patrick Chung is a very bright safety who makes the calls and adjustments, and third-round linebacker Tyrone McKenzie has played in so many systems that he can eventually help out at all the linebacker spots. Ron Brace, the Boston College nose tackle, may leverage the club against the contract demands of Vince Wilfork down the road. It will be tough for 12 draft picks to make this Patriots team, but they should also have a very good practice squad. They may still be in the market for a veteran outside pass rusher.

Beatty demonstrated more than enough athleticism to protect the passer, though he was not a true blindside protector when lefty Jared Lorenzen was under center. The concern is that Beatty's level of play spiked dramatically as a senior, forcing scouts to determine if Beatty matured as a senior or was motivated by the promise of a big NFL paycheck. Smith's size and quick feet are very intriguing, especially given his production as a starter the past two seasons, when he totaled nine interceptions and 15 pass breakups. A first-team All-Mountain West pick in 2008, Smith presents a nice size/speed combination to match up against bigger receivers. He actually began his career at wide receiver, playing there as a redshirt freshman (although he had seven rushes and only one catch) until the last two games of the season.

PROSPECT ANALYSIS
Marks struggled through his least impressive season from a statistical perspective but elected to declare for the draft at the end of his junior season. Marks posted 32 tackles, including 10 behind the line of scrimmage, in 2008 and leaves Auburn with 114 career stops, including 30 tackles for loss. The short, squatty Marks has bulk and strength to rank as one of the draft's top run defenders and earned second-team All-SEC honors as a junior despite struggling through the second half of the season with an ankle injury.

PROSPECT ANALYSIS
Brown performed consistently at defensive end, but will likely move to linebacker in the pros. His athleticism should allow him to make a successful transition. Denied all-Big East honors in 2007, despite 16.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks, because of the talent in the conference. Conference coaches were right to acknowledge his 2008 production, however, and did so, granting Brown first-team accolades after his 55 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and five forced fumbles made him arguably the conference's most explosive defender. Brown wasn't asked to take part in linebacker drills while at the Senior Bowl, but showed the quick feet and change-of-direction agility teams want to see. Brown could quietly rise up draft boards as the draft approaches.

PROSPECT ANALYSIS
With only 12 career receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns, Quinn's value lies in his blocking. Nicknamed "Big Rich," he plays up to his moniker, giving the Tar Heels essentially another offensive tackle at the line of scrimmage. With many of today's NFL offenses preferring receiving specialists at tight end, Quinn could still be waiting to hear his name called late in the draft. However, there are always teams on the lookout for physical run blockers capable of sneaking off the line of scrimmage for short-yardage passes. In this capacity, Quinn could find a niche in the pros. Had an arm span of 33 1/2 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.
