So many needs and not enough quality picks. Defensive end Tyson Jackson was a good start and reminds Scott Pioli of Richard Seymour, the guy they built the Patriots defense around. Defensive tackle Alex Magee looked good at the Senior Bowl and should get some work in a rotation at defensive end, but they still need pass rushers. After minicamps, we may see a deal for a veteran.

After a quiet start to his LSU career, Johnson finished it with a Senior Bowl invite. Coaches asked him to move from linebacker to fullback before spring 2006 practices after he played only one game as a sophomore. He took on the challenge even though he was a bit reluctant to get off the defensive side of the ball. Johnson didn't get a lot of carries (three touchdowns on 14 rushes as senior) or chances to catch the ball (two receptions for 33 yards). Few junior college transfers had a greater immediate impact than the one Brinkley had for South Carolina in 2006. He stepped in for the Gamecocks and posted 107 tackles -- more than twice the total of any teammate -- and earned first-team All-SEC accolades. Brinkley was lost for the 2007 season after only four games due to a torn ACL in his right knee. He returned in 2008, but hadn't yet regained his fluidity and straight-line speed and finished with 54 tackles. Blessed with rare size and power when healthy, Brinkley ranks as one of the more intriguing inside linebackers in recent memory. However, he was dismissed from the team after accepting larger-than-earned paychecks from a Norman car dealership. His draft stock is still on the rise because his athleticism and arm strength are coveted by scouts in this weak senior quarterback class. The second-team All-Southland pick (3,355 yards, 27 touchdown passes) showed Kansas this September that his skills are still FBS-caliber as he threw for 340 yards despite his team being completely overmatched. Electing to turn pro after only two seasons with the Owls, Casey is a rare all-around athlete who was a seventh-round pick by the Chicago White Sox out of high school and spent three years in their farm system before retiring from baseball and signing with Rice.
Once with the Owls, it didn't take long for the former quarterback to establish himself as a dominant weapon at various positions, earning consensus Conference USA Freshman accolades and honorable mention all-conference honors from league coaches. Casey lined up at seven different positions in one game in 2007, and has played everything from defensive end to safety to quarterback to wide receiver.
Playing primarily at wide receiver in 2008, Casey was dominant in Rice's spread attack; he finished second in the country with 111 receptions for 1,329 yards and 13 touchdowns. For some, Casey will be characterized as a Matt Jones-like 'tweener. But also like Jones, Casey's unique upside could land him a stunningly high draft selection come April, even if he'll be turning 25 during his rookie season. Lost to a torn ACL in August, Ingram presents an intriguing option for teams willing to gamble a mid-round pick on an athletic receiving specialist in the mode of Dallas Clark or Vernon Davis. Before the injury, Ingram ranked as one of the elite athletes in a strong crop of senior tight ends. With no remaining eligibility for a redshirt, however, he'll have to prove healthy enough for teams to warrant using a draft pick. The second-team All-SEC pick caught 34 passes for 508 yards (a stellar 14.9-yard average) and seven touchdowns in 2007 and appeared poised to at least match these numbers as a senior before the injury. Unable to play in 2008, Ingram has instead focused on his rehabilitation. If he can prove his health, he'll join an ever-growing line of receiving tight ends who NFL offensive coordinators hope can cause matchup problems with linebackers and safeties. A versatile athlete who has seen time at cornerback, free safety, running back, wide receiver and as a returner on both kickoffs and punts, Harris was used all over the field for the Hokies and presents similar options for his future NFL employer. Voted a second-team All-American in 2008 and a first-team All-ACC selection, Harris intercepted six passes, returning two of them for touchdowns. Unlike many of the Hokies' previous standout corners, Harris might fit best in the NFL in a zone scheme or even at free safety. His instincts and ability to close should help him continue to make big plays and perhaps disguise his lack of elite speed.

Possibly the largest player in college football, one might suspect Johnson is a dominant football player because he can block just about anything with his massive girth -- perhaps even sunlight. He shows surprising athleticism along with his size and strength, and teamed with left tackle Cirron Black to give LSU as formidable a left side along the line as any team in the country. In fact, while LSU's talented skill position players received much of the attention last season for the Tigers' offensive production in winning the national title, the play of the offensive line played a huge role. PROSPECT ANALYSIS
Burnett made headlines since starting as a freshman because of his skills as a cornerback (16 career interceptions, 35 pass breakups) and return man (three punt, two kickoff returns for touchdown). The four-year starter was named first-team All-Conference USA at cornerback and kickoff and punt returner as a senior. A bit smaller and slower than most teams would like in a starter, Burnett is a strong, confident Tampa-2 corner in the making.

The Steelers only had one start from last year's rookie class, and it might be more of the same in 2009 because the team picks at the bottom of every round. The Steelers need to come out of the draft with a five-technique defensive end, a cornerback to challenge for time as a dime back and at least two offensive linemen.

NEEDS ANALYSIS
Bill Belichick loves the second round and has no interest in a high-priced first-round player that will upset the chemistry in his locker room. The Patriots used four picks in the second round and parlayed other picks into two additional second-round picks next year. Coach Belichick considers Patrick Chung is a very bright safety who makes the calls and adjustments, and third-round linebacker Tyrone McKenzie has played in so many systems that he can eventually help out at all the linebacker spots. Ron Brace, the Boston College nose tackle, may leverage the club against the contract demands of Vince Wilfork down the road. It will be tough for 12 draft picks to make this Patriots team, but they should also have a very good practice squad. They may still be in the market for a veteran outside pass rusher.

PROSPECT ANALYSIS
One of the more intriguing prospects in this year's draft, Davis' athletic and playmaking abilities make some scouts believe he can be special. Statistically (7,258 yards, 56 touchdowns, 14 interceptions passing in 2006-2007), he matches up with other successful MAC quarterbacks of the past, including Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich.
Davis turned his production into postseason accolades, winning first-team all-conference the past two seasons. "Nate the Great" led the Cardinals to a 12-0 start and a No. 12 overall ranking before he and the team sputtered in the final two games off 2008 -- a loss to Buffalo in the MAC Championship and to Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl.
The 2008 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Davis elected to take advantage of a poor senior class of quarterbacks and declared for the draft after his junior campaign. He is one of only four quarterbacks -- all underclassmen -- thought of having a possibility to be drafted in the first two rounds. Had an arm span of 32 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.

NFL scouts are intrigued by Buehler's physical talent but how quickly he was able to acclimate to the pressure that comes with kicking for a prime program like USC after transferring from Santa Ana Junior College might be even more of an attention-grabber. He earned all-conference notice after his two starting seasons with the Trojans, including the first-team All-Pac-10 spot as a senior. Scouts view Buehler as an ascending prospect. However, the fact that he ended the regular season missing three field goals against rival UCLA won't be overlooked. Had an arm span of 30 1/4 inches and a hand span of 8 1/2 inches at the combine.

Ringer was "the man" for Michigan State's offense in 2008, carrying the ball an amazing 390 times for 1,637 yards and 22 touchdowns in an All-American senior season. This success wasn't really a surprise because he started off the year as the top senior running back prospect after his second-team all-conference 2007 (1,477 rushing yards, 35 receptions). He also rushed for 817 yards without a start as a true freshman in 2005. Although Ringer's numbers slowed down late in the season and there are some injury concerns, scouts saw enough of his toughness and solid all-around game to make him a second or early third-round selection. Had an arm span of 30 3/4 inches and a hand span of 9 5/8 inches at the combine.
