The phone is ringing in Dallas.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Cowboys have received calls from teams hoping to trade for veteran running back Darren McFadden, per a source.
Dallas, though, really wants to keep McFadden on the roster, Rapoport was told.
The 'Boys are deep at the position with both veteran Alfred Morris and rookie Ezekiel Elliott running well this preseason. McFadden, meanwhile, has missed the entire month dealing with an elbow injury.
Expected to be ready by Week 1, McFadden remains a logical target for runner-needy teams. It's fair to wonder if one of those inquisitive calls came from the Redskins, who have all sorts of issues at the position.Â
McFadden, 29, has been an injury concern for much of his eight NFL seasons, but enjoyed a productive campaign last year while rumbling for 1,089 yards at 4.6 yards per carry. His upcoming workload is in question, though, with Morris operating so effectively behind Elliott, who looked sensational in last week's preseason debut against Seattle.
After losing quarterback Tony Romo until midseason with a fractured back, Dallas is a candidate to lead the league in rushing attempts. That will require more than just Elliott, meaning the 'Boys aren't going to give McFadden away unless they're thrilled with an offer. Stay tuned.
