Chargers RB Najee Harris (eye) placed on active/non-football injury list to begin training camp

As expected, the Los Angeles Chargers officially placed running back Najee Harris on the active/non-football injury list Thursday.

Harris sustained an eye injury during a fireworks mishap on July 4. His agent, Doug Hendrickson, labeled the injury "superficial."

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz indicated on Wednesday afternoon that the club anticipated placing Harris on the NFI list, but that he hadn't yet reported at that time.

"We haven't seen him yet, our doctors haven't seen him yet," Hortiz said via the team's official website. "He's finishing up his doctors appointments, he'll report today. We'll get our eyes on him.

"Surface-level injury, obviously around the eye, so I'm sure there's bruising and all that. But we haven't seen him. We'll get more clarity when he gets here and our doctors see him, but we're in communication with the doctors there."

Coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Thursday that Harris was indeed at the facility.

"He's in meetings," Harbaugh said. "Just great to have him, a lot of gratitude that he's here."

The Chargers signed Harris to a one-year, fully guaranteed $5.25 million contract in the offseason. The former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick was expected to battle for reps with first-rounder Omarion Hampton, Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins in Harbaugh's backfield.
