Chargers add Don Shula's grandson, Chris, to staff

The San Diego Chargers announced the hire of a new defensive quality control coach.

Normally such employment transactions wouldn't warrant an individual posts -- that's why we concoct trackers and the like.

However, the name of coach Mike McCoy's new hire caught our eye: Chris Shula.

Yes, that is the grandson of Don Shula -- just the winningest coach in NFL history -- and son of former head coach David Shula (Bengals 1992-1996).

Chris Shula spent last season as defensive coordinator at John Carroll University (where his grandfather graduated in 1951). Shula also spent time as an assistant at Ball State (2010) and Indiana University (2011-13).

Perhaps the Shula family will one day boast three generations of NFL head coaches. It will be interesting to see if another legacy can climb the NFL coaching ladder -- Vince Lombardi's grandson is already on his way.
