Patriots assistant makes trip to Provo for BYU's pro day

Representatives from 17 NFL teams -- including New England Patriots assistant special teams coach Ray Ventrone -- were present for BYU's pro day on March 27, when 12 players worked out in ideal conditions indoors on FieldTurf.

Outside linebacker Alani Fua (6-foot-4 5/8, 239 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 and 4.57 seconds. He had a 9-foot-11 broad jump, performed 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, and then stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. Fua has nice, long 33 1/8-inch arms. He was good in pass coverage during the positional drills. Scouts are surprised Fua has been able to keep his weight up.

Wide receiver Jordan Leslie (6-1 5/8, 204) ran the 40 in 4.41 and 4.46 seconds. He had a 36-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-10 broad jump. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.08 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.87 seconds. Leslie -- who has big, 10 1/4-inch hands -- performed 18 strength lifts. He did a really good job running routes and catching the ball during the positional workout. He looked very athletic. Leslie could be a late-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft or a priority free-agent pickup following the event.

Free safety Craig Bills (6-1 1/8, 205) ran the 40 in 4.48 and 4.52 seconds. He had a 33-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.95 seconds. He also performed 19 strength lifts. Unfortunately, Bills was unable to complete his pro day workout. Midway through the pro day, Bills hurt his foot. If an NFL team is interested in acquiring Bills -- most likely as a free-agent pickup following the draft -- it would have to go back to work Bills out again when he's healthy. Bills is reminiscent of former BYU defensive back and current Kansas City Chiefs member Daniel Sorensen.
