NFL's unluckiest players: Diving into best 'bad luck' stats of 2024 in honor of Friday the 13th

Today marks an infamous day on the calendar: Friday the 13th.

The date, notoriously associated with superstitious bad luck, conjures up misadventures and fears -- many of which are captured in the horror genre.

In honor of this Friday the 13th, the crack NFL Research crew has provided the most "bad luck" stats of 2024.

Let's dive in.

Philadelphia Eagles · RB

The Eagles RB put up 2,000 rushing yards and earned AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors, but his stat line could have been even more outlandish.

Barkley set a career high with 13 rushing touchdowns but was also tackled a league-high 11 times on the opponent's 1-yard line in 2024. Those 11 plays occurred over nine drives (two instances of being tackled twice at the 1-yard line in the same drive) and resulted in seven Jalen Hurts rushing TDs, one Hurts passing TD and one field goal.

The most any other player got tackled on the 1-yard line last season was eight times. Five players tied for that mark: the Cardinals' James Conner, Panthers' Chuba Hubbard, Lions' David Montgomery, Buccaneers' Bucky Irving and Commanders' Brian Robinson.

Los Angeles Chargers · QB
Tampa Bay Buccaneers · QB

The two former first-round picks were each the victim of a host of dropped passes. According to Next Gen Stats, Mayfield and Herbert each had 25 passes dropped in 2024 (tied for the most in the NFL). Top 5: Herbert, 25; Mayfield, 25; Joe Burrow, 24; Aaron Rodgers, 24; Jordan Love, 23.

Chicago Bears · QB

Williams' rookie struggles were notorious. Some of the issues were on the young passer. Others were on a woeful offensive line. According to Next Gen Stats, Williams was the victim of 57 unblocked pressures and 13 unblocked sacks in 2024 (both most in the NFL).

Chicago hopes that horrific stat line will be negated by improved blocking and a more aware QB in Year 2.

Las Vegas Raiders · QB

Smith put up a career-high 4,320 yards passing in 2024 in a pass-happy Seattle offense. That figure could have been higher if not for yellow hankies. Smith (now with the Raiders) had 249 passing yards negated by penalties in 2024, the most in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers · RB

Like Geno, Jacobs had a trove of yards negated by illegal offensive maneuvers. The Packers running back had 94 rushing yards negated by penalty, most in the NFL, and three touchdowns negated by penalty, tied for the most in the NFL.

Sidenote: Two of the five players who had the most rushing yards negated by penalty were quarterbacks (Jacobs, 94; QB Lamar Jackson, 87; RB Tony Pollard, 67; QB Patrick Mahomes, 66; RB Kenneth Walker III, 66).

Houston Texans · WR
Chicago Bears · WR

You guessed it: The WR version of the last two sections. Collins had 142 receiving yards negated by penalties in 2024, the most in the NFL. The Texans wideout was one of four players with 100-plus receiving yards negated by penalties (Pittsburgh's George Pickens, 122; New Orleans' Juwan Johnson, 117; Seattle's Jaxon Smith-Njigba, 114).

Zaccheaus matched his career high with three receiving TDs in 2024 but also tied Jacobs with three TDs negated by penalty.

Los Angeles Rams · LB

The Defensive Rookie of the Year ranked fourth in the NFL in pressures with 76, per Next Gen Stats, but tied for 95th in sacks (4.5). The 5.9% sack conversion rate (4.5 sacks on 76 pressures) ranked lowest in the NFL among 72 edge rushers with 250-plus pass rush snaps in 2024. Verse has already vowed to change this figure in 2025.

  1. Bengals' Trey Hendrickson: 92 pressures, 17.5 sacks
  2. Texans' Danielle Hunter: 90 pressures, 12.0 sacks
  3. Browns' Myles Garrett: 84 pressures, 14.0 sacks
  4. Rams' Jared Verse: 76 pressures, 4.5 sacks
  5. Cowboys' Micah Parsons: 75 pressures, 12.0 sacks
