The DUI case against Florida State cornerback P.J. Williams has been dismissed.
Williams was arrested April 3 in Tallahassee, Fla., and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the charges were dropped, with the state attorney's office writing in paperwork filed Monday that "upon review of the video evidence from the law enforcement officer's patrol vehicle, as well as the video evidence obtained from the Leon County Jail, the state is unable" to prove that Williams was driving and that his faculties were impaired by alcohol. The state attorney's office wrote that "significant portions of the DUI investigation were not captured on video due to the positioning of the officer's patrol vehicle" and that "although the officer had probable cause for the defendant's arrest, the evidence before the State is not sufficient to sustain a conviction at trial."
Williams (6-foot-0, 196 pounds) is the No. 35 player on NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah's list of the draft's Top 50 prospects. He has good size, showed an ability to be a press-man corner at FSU and plays with confidence. His 40-yard dash time at the NFL Scouting Combine (4.57 seconds) was poor, though he did improve that to 4.45 at FSU's pro day. While his top-end speed might not be what teams covet, his size and coverage ability are exactly what clubs seek. He should be a second- or third-round pick.
While the charge was dropped, the arrest itself likely led to NFL teams re-examining Williams. That he was arrested at all causes some red flags to fly.
