Jim Kelly was declared cancer-free in September, but now the Hall of Fame quarterback has developed a staph infection in his bones.
The former Buffalo Bills quarterback told The Miami Herald this week that he is undergoing an eight-week treatment for a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. The management includes intravenous antibiotics three times a day.
After the pain from cancer in his upper jaw subsided, Kelly said it returned with the staph infection.
"I came down with MRSA," he told the newspaper. "I was cleared in September of the cancer -- I have another MRI in two weeks. The toughest part for me was I was almost ready to take out my feeding tube, I was feeling good and they said they need to do some biopsies. Those 12 biopsies put me back so far."
Kelly added that he underwent surgery to shave the bone down.
Once again, the former star quarterback will lean on his "Kelly Tough" mantra to fight through his latest battle.
