Vanderbilt LB's FG block leads top 3 special-teams plays of 2016

From Week 1 of the 2016 college football season through the bowl games, every weekend produced some jaw-dropping plays that had to be seen to be believed. College Football 24/7 tracked them and took on the task of naming the best of the best. Here's a look at the three of the most impressive special-teams plays of the season:

3. All the way back

Game: Houston 33, Oklahoma 23
Date: Sept. 3
Location: NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas.

Brandon Wilson and San Francisco 49ers CB Chris Davis will forever have something in common: a "Kick Six" touchdown, in which they returned a long FG attempt that fell short the length of the field for a score. For Davis, the stakes were certainly higher -- it was a game-winning play in an Alabama-Auburn rivalry that had serious national-championship implications. But the impact of Wilson's shouldn't be discounted, either. It helped sparked an upset of Oklahoma that turned out to be one of only two OU losses. Wilson has announced he intends to apply for the 2017 draft as an underclassman.

2. 60 yards the hard way

Game: LSU 34, Jacksonville State 13
Date: Sept. 10
Location: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, La.

One of the top cornerback prospects in the game, Tre'Davious White showed why he's a dangerous punt returner, as well, on this play. Dangerous, perhaps, for both the opponent and his own team. He retreated more than 20 yards after fielding this Jacksonville State punt while trying to avoid tackles, but when he finally found the seam he wanted to turn upfield, it was as good as six points for the Tigers. The play went for 60 yards in the box score, but White made it far more adventurous.

1. Perfect timing

Game: Auburn 23, Vanderbilt 16
Date: Nov. 5
Location: Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, Ala.

Vanderbilt LB Zach Cunningham's blocked field goal against Auburn should be the first highlight on his resume. He leaped clean over AU snapper Ike Powell without touching him, which would have been a penalty, and timed the jump with the snap to breach the protection instantly. AU kicker Daniel Carlson, one of the best kickers in the college game, never had a chance.
