Confident Smith throwing more aggressively for Chiefs

Kansas City's offense was painful to watch at times last season. That wasn't the case on Sunday.

Quarterback Alex Smith put on a clinic in a 27-20 win over the Texans, completing 22-of-33 passing for 243 yards and three touchdowns.

It goes beyond the numbers, though, with Smith looking as comfortable as ever in Andy Reid's West Coast-styled offense. He calmly guided the team up and down the field, whipping the ball to seven different targets and helping tight end Travis Kelce to his biggest day as a pro with 106 yards and two scores off six catches.

"He was on the money all day," Kelce said of Smith, per The Kansas City Star. "Everything was in range. When he's playing lights out and the offensive line is blocking like they were today, we're a pretty solid football team."

Kelce deserves plenty of credit. After notching 862 yards and five touchdowns off just 688 snaps last season, Kelce will feast this year if Smith keeps it up. The third-year target consistently got open against coverage and gave Smith an easy target to throw to all day.

It helped that Smith -- searching for opportunities downfield -- wasn't afraid to take his shots. It also showed up on this quick-hit bullet into the end zone:

With Kelce embracing his "Baby Gronk" role, Jamaal Charles in his prime and Jeremy Maclin giving the Chiefs a wideout who can finally stretch the field, Smith, at last, has weapons around him. It showed on Sunday.

The real test will come Thursday night against Denver's smothering defense. If Smith can double down against the Broncos, it's time to take this Chiefs offense very seriously.
