The market for free-agent guard Evan Mathis has been slow to develop, something he might not have expected back when the Philadelphia Eagles released him in June.
It appears we finally have some movement on him choosing a team. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Mathis will go through with his scheduled visit to the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, according to a source informed of the player's plans. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed after Friday's preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that Mathis was set to visit "for a physical." The potential trip initially was on standby while Mathis waited to find out if he could reach an agreement with another team before getting on the plane. Rapoport said that is unlikely to happen.
Perhaps the trip will spur on a team like the Miami Dolphins or New York Jets to pony up, but Mathis has had a difficult time finding a contract worth signing this offseason. We've previously read reports that he's "close" to a deal, but they have turned out to by hollow threats to spur action by moderately interested teams. Â
The two-time Pro Bowler asked for his release from the Eagles, according to coach Chip Kelly. He was set to make $5.5 million in Philadelphia, and reportedly had an offer on the table that would have given him a $1 million raise. Mathis chose not to take that contract, and the Eagles eventually got tired of the drama and let Mathis go.
While Mathis has had plenty of interest this offseason, this is the first official visit he will take. It's certainly a great fit for both sides. Seattle's interior offensive line could desperately use help, and Mathis could chase a title with the Seahawks. Even if he has to take a pay cut to do so.
