Ohio State's Urban Meyer undergoes unplanned appendectomy

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer needed surgery Wednesday to remove his appendix.

The school had announced that Meyer would have to miss a planned speaking engagement Wednesday at Findlay University, a small school in Findlay, Ohio, for what the school termed an unplanned surgery.

Meyer texted the Columbus Dispatch after the surgery Wednesday, writing "All good. Appendix out." He also confirmed to the Dispatch that the plan was for him to go home at some point Wednesday evening.

Meyer is scheduled to throw out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game Friday night, and that conceivably could be called off. Meyer played minor league baseball in the Atlanta Braves' organization for two years after high school before attending Cincinnati, where he played defensive back.

Meyer's health always will be a topic of discussion, as it was a reason he stepped down as Florida's coach after the 2010 season. He was hospitalized with chest pains after Florida lost to Alabama in the 2009 SEC championship game -- Florida was ranked No. 1 and Alabama No. 2 going into that contest -- and Meyer had surgery last year to drain a cyst on his brain.
