The critical narrative of former Texas coach Mack Brown's recruiting misses developing into major college stars has added some fuel.
Add Texas A&M offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi's recruiting story to the pile.
"The sense I got was, 'I'll show them,'" Tom Westerberg, Ogbuehi's high school coach, told CBS Sports. Johnny Manziel, of course, also failed to catch Texas' eye when he was a recruit, but he's not the only Heisman Trophy winner who can claim that as part of his story.
Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, who could win a second consecutive Heisman this fall, said he would have gone to Texas if offered. Winston was an out-of-state prospect, unlike Ogbuehi and Manziel, and reportedly didn't have as much interest in Texas as he led people to believe.
Nevertheless, the perception has stuck.
While it might not look good, it's significant that Texas is a big state, too big for any coach to land every elite in-state prospect. Or, as the case may be, less-than-elite prospects like Ogbuehi was as a high school junior. Check back on the recruiting battles waged between Florida, FSU and Miami in the 1990s. Some of the biggest stars from that state didn't have offers from all three. Or even two.
It happens.
Still, when a trio including a first-round NFL draft pick, a projected first-rounder, and a Heisman Trophy winner fail to draw State U interest, it's not good ointment for a frustrated fan base with high expectations.
