The Oklahoma Sports Information office has been pretty busy issuing statements as of late.
The school issued another on Friday night, announcing that wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham's waiver request to play immediately for the Sooners was denied by the NCAA. The NCAA later confirmed the decision.
"The University of Oklahoma has learned that the waiver request it entered on behalf of Dorial Green-Beckham has been denied by the NCAA," the school announced in a release. "The University accepts that decision and will continue to provide the appropriate assistance to Dorial, just as it does with other students, in helping him grow personally from the many opportunities available to him at OU."
Green-Beckham transferred from Missouri to Oklahoma in July. The two schools reportedly worked together to give the wide receiver a chance to be eligible this season by filing a so-called "run-off" waiver with the NCAA. The waiver calls for immediate eligibility in cases where the transferring player has no control over his cause of exit.
The attempt was unsuccessful, though, and he will have to sit out the season to earn eligibility at Oklahoma.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound former No. 1 overall recruit caught 59 passes for 883 yards and 12 touchdowns for Missouri's SEC runner-up team last year. Green-Beckham was booted from the Tigers by head coach Gary Pinkel a day after it was learned that Green-Beckham would not face charges stemming from an incident in which he allegedly forced his way into an apartment while searching for his girlfriend and pushed a female acquaintance of his girlfriend's, who fell down some stairs.
The loss of Green-Beckham is a significant one for the Sooners, who return only one notable starter at wide receiver in junior Sterling Shepard. Without the talented transfer in the lineup, junior Durron Neal, sophomore Derrick Woods or freshman Michiah Quick likely move into a starting role as targets for quarterback Trevor Knight.
Green-Beckham will be eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft as a third-year sophomore.
As for those other statements from Oklahoma of late -- the school suspended RB Joe Mixon for the 2014 season and is seeking to enforce a one-year suspension of LB Frank Shannon.
Oklahoma opens the season on Aug. 30 against Louisiana Tech.
