University of Arkansas granted trademark rights to hog call

The United States Patent and Trademark Office settles disputes all the time where two parties have an interest in securing trademark rights for the same property. But something tells us nobody will be putting up a fight with the University of Arkansas Board of Regents for its recent registration of the "Woooooooo. Pig. Sooie." chant that is popular at Razorbacks home football games.

Who would want to?

According to forbes.com, the USPTO has granted registration of the sensory mark, which Arkansas applied for about a year and a half ago. There isn't another tradition like it in college football -- heck, there isn't even another team with a Razorback for a mascot at the FBS level -- but apparently Arkansas officials felt the need to legally stake claim to something that already was totally their own.

This isn't exactly the "12th Man" slogan that is dear to both Texas A&M and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

Given that Arkansas went 0-8 in SEC play last season, and was picked by a runaway margin to finish dead last in the SEC West again this year, Razorbacks fans probably won't have much reason to yell the cheer this fall anyway.

They'll be the only ones allowed to yell it, though.
