Jason Pierre-Paul taken off New York Giants' PUP list

Jason Pierre-Paul has been cleared to practice after being activated off the New York Giants' reserve/physically unable to perform list, the team announced Monday.

Pierre-Paul underwent back surgery in early June.

JPP said Monday that despite being free of pain, he won't participate in the Giants' final preseason game. Earlier this month, JPP and the team sent some mixed signals regarding whether or not the defensive end would be back Week 1.

"I'm not going to rush. A back (injury) is a serious thing," Pierre-Paul said, per the New York Daily News.

The fourth-year pro is the most explosive player on the Giants' defensive line, and with the holes in the linebacker group and injuries sustained in the secondary, the Giants will heavily lean on the D-line on both pass and rush downs.

If JPP does in fact return for the start of meaningful games, it will give the defense its most important chess piece back.
