Oklahoma freshman defensive end D.J. Ward is undergoing surgery Tuesday to have his spleen removed, Sooners head coach Bob Stoops announced.

Ward will miss about six weeks as he recovers from the procedure, Stoops said.

Ward, a consensus four-star recruit from Lawton, Okla., was expected to compete for playing time on Oklahoma's rebuilt defensive line. Ward enrolled early at Oklahoma and participated in part of spring practice this past April.
