Ryan Tannehill gets first-string reps, roots for Heat

On the final day of the team's offseason program, Miami Dolphins first-round quarterback Ryan Tannehill (finally) got some work with the No. 1 offense after watching David Garrard and Matt Moore split the first-team reps. Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin seemed pleased with the progress that Tannehill is making, but lamented some interceptions in two-minute and red-zone drills.

"He made a lot of progress. I thought there were a lot of good things," Philbin said,  according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. "Ryan threw a couple real nice balls. He made a couple good adjustments in terms of recognition of protection. We like his poise, intelligence, continuity. ... We can't throw interceptions in a two-minute drill."

Darlington: Welcome (back) to Miami
Can Chad Ochocinco help the Dolphins in his return to Miami? Jeff Darlington says it's definitely worth a try. More ...

Tannehill said in an interview with NFL Network's Solomon Wilcots after Thursday's practice that he will continue to get more reps with the starters, which will ultimately help him adjust to the pro game.

"I got more comfortable as the day went on, just the speed of the game," Tannehill told Wilcots. "It's a little bit faster with the ones than it is going with the other groups. I feel like I got better as the day went on and we'll see what happens and hopefully I can get more reps in August (during training camp)."

Tannehill is also making progress off the field, aligning his favorite teams with those of the local fan base. A native of Big Spring, Texas and a Texas A&M alum, Tannehill comes from Big 12 country, but is pulling for his new local hoops team in the NBA finals over the Oklahoma City Thunder, Izzy Gould of the Sun-Sentinel reports.

"I can't say I've always been a Miami Heat fan, but ever since I got down to Miami, I'm a fan of many Miami teams," Tannehill said. "I'm definitely rooting for the Heat. Call me a bandwagon fan, whatever you want to call me. I was on it before we they got to the finals. I'll root for them tonight. Hopefully they close it out."
