Translation: We were willing to listen. No one gave up the goods.
"Our first choice with respect to Osi is that he will play for the Giants and retire as a Giant," Reese said. "That is what we would like to happen. Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now. So we would still like to make it work. Hopefully it will work out. But all of our options are always open."
It's hard to imagine Umenyiora moving on now. He's worth more to the Giants than a future pick, unless that future pick is in the first round. No teams have been willing to give that up for Umenyiora because they know the 30-year-old will require a big new contract in a trade. So expect an unhappy but productive Umenyiora to suit for the Giants once again next season.
It's not such a bad arrangement for Tom Coughlin.
