Saints fortify backfield with signing of veteran FB McKie

The New Orleans Saints have signed free-agent fullback Jason McKie to a one-year contract, general manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

McKie is an eight-year NFL veteran who spent the past seven seasons with the Chicago Bears before being released in March. McKie could replace Kyle Eckel, who wasn't tendered a contract offer. The Saints also have veterans Heath Evans and Zak Keasey at fullback.

McKie played in all 16 games for the Bears last season, starting 11, and caught five passes for 13 yards. He has 47 career starts in 88 games and carried the ball 29 times for 84 yards and three touchdowns and had 68 receptions for 364 yards and three scores.

Loomis also said the Saints waived running back Carlos Brown and safety Ryan Hamilton, both of whom signed with the team last month as rookie free agents.
