Quick Take: Texans quiet host Panthers

It was over when ...
Panthers returner Nick Goings fumbled on a third-quarter kickoff and the Texans recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown and a 31-14 lead. Houston was never again seriously threatened and coasted to a 34-21 victory. The 34 points are the most in franchise history for the Texans, who are 2-0 for the first time.

Game balls
Texans quarterback Matt Schaub had his second straight superb start and has now completed 72 percent of his passes through two games. On the Panthers side, wide receiver Steve Smith delivered another sublime performance, catching eight passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns, Smith's fourth career game with two or more touchdown receptions.

Key stat
Carolina did not show much balance in its offensive attack, throwing on 41 of its 59 plays, or 70 percent, of the time.

Noteworthy
Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson once again demonstrated the chemistry he has with Schaub, catching seven passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson left late in the second half with a knee sprain and is day-to-day. ... The Texans' win snapped an eight-game losing streak against NFC opponents.
