Colts' Saturday has arthroscopic knee surgery; return unknown

Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday underwent successful arthroscopic knee surgery to remove a "loose body," the team announced Tuesday.

The Colts didn't reveal how much time Saturday will miss or which knee was repaired, but the 11-year veteran will immediately begin rehabilitation upon returning to training camp in Anderson, Ind., the team said in a statement.

Saturday is one of the Colts' most durable, consistent and experienced players. He has missed just six games since winning the starting job in 2000.

Saturday also has been to four Pro Bowls and is the second-longest-tenured Colts player behind Peyton Manning. The quarterback joined the team in 1998, and Saturday signed in 1999.

Saturday, who missed two morning practices in a row, was one of four Colts linemen to sit out sessions Tuesday.

Left tackle Charlie Johnson hasn't practiced since spraining his right foot Friday afternoon, and rookie guard Jacques McClendon also missed his second consecutive morning workout Tuesday. Also missing was right tackle Ryan Diem, whose wife gave birth to the couple's first child last week.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell didn't say why McClendon was out or when Johnson might return.

In other offensive line moves, the Colts signed James Williams, an undrafted rookie from Harvard, and released veteran Andy Alleman, a free-agent acquisition. Alleman hasn't practiced since hurting his back during Friday afternoon's workout.
