When Chip Kelly took over the Philadelphia Eagles and Michael Vick re-upped for another season, the immediate impression was that any questions about the quarterback job had been answered.
That seems oh so long ago.
A budding quarterback controversy in Philly has been one of the bigger storylines of the offseason. Things have gone from Vick being the presumed starter to talk that Nick Foles has surpassed him in practice to wild speculation that Matt Barkley could line up under center as a starter.
For the record, we're not buying that one yet.
But one thing is clear ... we don't really know anything about what Kelly is going to do with his offense. And that extends beyond the guys potentially throwing the football -- it includes the guys who might be catching it as well.
The Eagles enter camp with 12 receivers on the roster, but a handful of them are considered on the bubble when it comes to making the squad for Week 1. Right now, the only wideouts expected to make any sort of impact are DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Yet there's still no definitive answer on how those guys will be used.

Jets seeking flyers
Speaking of teams looking to make moves with its wide receiving corps, enter the New York Jets. Gang Green is already facing the prospect of going into the regular season without Santonio Holmes.
With a lack of experience among its remaining pass-catchers, New York has dialed up Laurent Robinson and Austin Collie -- two players who have been productive in the past, but have been sidelined by concussion issues in recent seasons. If that's not enough, there are reports that the Jetscould bring back Braylon Edwards, who played 31 games for the team over parts of three seasons.
At this point, the favorite to be the No. 1 pass target in 2013 is the man who led that category in 2012 -- Jeremy Kerley. Not exactly a name fantasy owners are clamoring over.
Then again, much of it could depend on who's slinging the rock this season. With Geno Smith having signed his contract and preparing to show up for training camp, another QB controversy could be well underway.

» Ryan Tannehill says the Dolphins offense still has "some rust to knock off", especially after he struggled to connect with new target Mike Wallace. It's too early to be concerned, but if this offense -- and its assorted pieces -- produces anything this season, the Tannehill-Wallace connection will have to be a part of it.
» One of those pieces, Lamar Miller, earned praise from coach Joe Philbin, who called the young back "very fundamentally sound" and commending Miller on his imcreased knowledge of the system. Comments like that would seem to mean more touches could be in the works this season. That should only help the rusher's draft stock.
» Second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden is reportedly showing improved footwork and is getting rid of the football quicker. Weeden was closer to Tannehill than he was to Andrew Luck last season, but showed moments of -- dare we say? -- fantasy competence. It's likely he'll go undrafted in plenty of leagues, but his improvement (or lack thereof) could determine whether he's a quality waiver wire option later in the season.
» After appearing on the verge of competing for the Rams' No. 1 receiving job, Brian Quick has reportedly fallen to being the team's No. 4 wideout. However, team COO Kevin Demoff predicts the team won't have a true No. 1 who catches 70-plus passes. Instead, St. Louis could have a committee of players snagging 40-50 balls this year. Ugh, say it ain't so. RB-by-committee is hard enough. Please don't let this scourge make its way to the NFL's wideouts.
» Colt McCoy is reportedly solidly locked in as the 49ers backup quarterback. Just something to keep in mind in case Colin Kaepernick goes down with an injury.
» The IDP set should certainly be keeping an eye on Von Miller's situation. The Broncos linebacker could be forced to sit out four games, pending his appeal, for violating an unspecified league rule. As one of the league's sack masters, Miller is an impact IDP option. Combine his potential absence to Elvis Dumervil's departure and the Broncos D/ST is likely to take a hit as well.
