Stephen Hill signed to Panthers' practice squad

Stephen Hill has escaped the unemployment line. The next goal is getting back on a 53-man roster.

The Carolina Panthersannounced Tuesday that they have signed the former New York Jets wide receiver to their practice squad. The move comes one day after Hill worked out for the team in Charlotte.

Hill was released by the Jets on Saturday after a disappointing two-year stint at the Meadowlands. Hill went unclaimed on waivers, a somewhat surprising development for a 23-year-old former second-round pick with size (6-foot-4) and speed (4.36 40-yard dash time in the combine). Hill is just one year older than Kelvin Benjamin, the Panthers' first-round pick.

Hill's agent blamed the Jets' scheme and personnel for the wideout's lack of production -- just 45 receptions for 594 yards and four touchdowns over 23 games. Hill could help a Panthersreceiving group dangerously low on speed and experience.

This is a flier worth taking.
