As the Indianapolis Colts' season spirals, the tension is reaching the upper levels of the organization.
Following Sunday's 27-21 loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Indianapolis Star's Zak Keefer reported that Colts owner Jim Irsay and general manager Ryan Grigson engaged in a "heated conversation" in the locker room.
Specifics on the context of the discussion or what was said were not detailed in the report, but it's not difficult to see that Irsay would expect better than what his team has provided through seven weeks. They fell to 3-4 on the season on Sunday after a lifeless start, getting down 21-0.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport noted that organizationally, real talk, honesty and debate are all encouraged. So just because it looks heated doesn't mean it's an argument or something that could boil to more than in-the-moment frustration.Â
However, with Super Bowl aspirations, Sunday was the type of embarrassing loss that could make an owner ponder scrapping his entire project and starting anew. If the 2-5 Jaguars overtake them in the division in the next couple weeks, the "heated conversations" will intensify.
While coach Chuck Pagano has been on the hot seat this season -- and justifiably for certain reasons, i.e. fake punts -- Grigson has mostly gotten a pass. However, many of the GM's additions have not panned out. Veterans Andre Johnson, Trent Cole, Todd Herremans and Anthony Castonzo, among others, are struggling to produce. His first-round pick, Phillip Dorsett, has been inconsistent and is now out four to six weeks with a fractured ankle.
Whether Irsay believes the problems sit with the man shopping for the groceries, the one cooking the meal or both remains to be seen. Whoever is to blame, the food he's been served has been terrible in 2015.
