Report: 49ers' Patrick Willis (toe) likely out Week 7

Don't expect Patrick Willis to make an immediate return to action for the San Francisco 49ers.

ProFootballTalk reported Tuesday that Willis has been diagnosed with a sprained toe and is "currently unlikely" to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

Willis will have his toe evaluated by the same specialist who has treated Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, who is also fighting a lingering toe issue, according to PFT.

Willis injured the toe during the second quarter of the Niners' 31-17 win over the St. Louis Ramson Monday night. The five-time All-Pro didn't return to the game and was seen in an orthopedic boot by the second half.

Willis' injury is the latest test for a 49ers defense that is already without stars Aldon Smith (suspension) and NaVorro Bowman (knee surgery). Willis' absence means an opportunity for third-round pick Chris Borland, who will likely slide into the starting lineup against the Broncos.

Borland replaced Willis against the Rams and played 31 snaps in the second half.
