Redskins sign veteran running back Pierre Thomas

The Washington Redskins added pass-catching veteran running back Pierre Thomas, the team announced Friday.

Thomas, 31, spent one week with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year, carrying four times for 12 yards.

The signing could indicate the Redskins might be without scat back Chris Thompson -- the team's leading receiver out of the backfield -- for this week and possibly longer. Thompson is dealing with a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Thomas has long been one of the best pass-catching backs in the NFL. He excelled in the screen game throughout his eight seasons in New Orleans.

With Matt Jones and Alfred Morris carrying the load, however, Thomas is likely to see little time on the field.

To make room on the roster, the Redskins placed defensive end Stephen Paea (toe) on injured reserve.
