Quintin Mikell signs with Carolina Panthers

After an offseason of flirting, the Carolina Panthers signed free-agent safety Quintin Mikell in an effort to bolster a shaky secondary, the team announced Monday.

The Panthers also placed free safety Haruki Nakamura on injured reserve with a concussion.

While the Panthers upgraded their front seven in the 2013 NFL Draft, the secondary remains a big question mark entering the season.

Mikell could replace Mike Mitchell at strong safety, alongside starting free safety Charles Godfrey.

A 10-year NFL veteran, Mikell started 32 games in the past two seasons for the St. Louis Rams. He also spent time with coach Ron Rivera and defensive coordinator Sean McDermott in Philadelphia, so the hope is that he's already familiar with the Panthers' defensive schemes.
