Packers' Matt LaFleur dismisses idea of cutting WR Romeo Doubs: 'No, that will not happen'

Like plenty of teams, the Packers have some difficult decisions to make as they trim their roster down to 53 by next Tuesday's deadline.

Cuts could affect the receiver room, even if the group isn't entirely healthy right now. Just don't put Romeo Doubs on your cut candidates list.

"I'd be very shocked if he ever was going anywhere," Packers coach Matt LaFleur told FanDuel TV's Kay Adams this week. "No, that will not happen. Because Rome is out there competing and doing everything that we need to see from him, and obviously he's played a lot of ball for us and at a high level. He's been a great teammate and he goes out there and you can count on him every day."

As the regular season approaches, Doubs occupies a place in Green Bay's top receiving trio, which also includes Jayden Reed and rookie first-rounder Matthew Golden. The latter's arrival was long overdue for many Packers fans frustrated with their team's refusal to spend a top pick on an offensive weapon, but he'll take the field with additional responsibility with Christian Watson still working his way back from an ACL tear suffered in the final week of the 2024 regular season.

These circumstances -- plus injuries currently affecting Reed and other receivers -- add importance to Doubs' role in the Green Bay offense. He's yet to break 700 receiving yards in a season in his career, but if there ever was a time to do so, it might be the 2025 season.

With this clearly in mind, LaFleur dismissed the notion Green Bay might release him, and rightfully so. If the Packers are going to contend in a highly competitive NFC North, they'll need as many weapons as possible.
