Evan Mathis put on IR-recall; Allen Barbe out for year

The Philadelphia Eagles used a generous portion of Tuesday's workday to address the team's dumpster fire along the offensive line.

The team announced that Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis was placed on the injured reserve-designated to return list with a sprained MCL. Philadelphia also tweeted that right tackle Allen Barbre has been lost for the year with an ankle injury. Barbre was filling in for the suspended Lane Johnson.

The loss of Mathis is especially crushing. A 16-game starter last season, the 32-year-old veteran is a centerpiece of Philly's athletic line and a staple in Chip Kelly's up-tempo attack.

Paper-thin up front, the Eagles on Tuesday signed former Pro Bowl guard Wade Smith. At 33, Smith has dabbled at center but was a fixture at left guard over the past four seasons in Houston following stops with the Chiefs, Jets and Dolphins.

After seeing his play nosedive last season, it's not a good sign that Smith was sent packing by both the Texans and Seahawks over the past six months. The Eagles, though, are in no position get picky.
