Carson Palmer's nerve issue in shoulder lingering

Carson Palmer believed last week that he'd "definitely"be ready for the Arizona Cardinals' Week 5 matchup against the Denver Broncos.

As the Cardinals come out of their bye, Palmer doesn't sound quite as optimistic.

Palmer told ESPN's Ed Werder that the nerve issue in his shoulder hasn't progressed as quickly as he'd hoped. According to Werder, Palmer "still thinks he could prove capable of starting."

Palmer has been sidelined since Week 2 by a nerve issue that has kept him from throwing the football at full strength. Cardinals coach Bruce Ariansacknowledged on Monday that he hoped Palmer would have made more progress by this point. Arians said Wednesday will be key in making a determination on the quarterback's availability.

Palmer has said he's given up hours of sleep to make time for various treatments aimed at getting the nerve back to normal. Signs seem to be pointing to a third start for backup Drew Stanton. A trip to Denver would be Stanton's toughest test to date.
