Bears elevate QB Matt Barkley to active roster

Former USC quarterbacks are having quite a week.

On Wednesday, the Browns confirmed that rookie Cody Kessler would start against the Dolphins due to injuries to both Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown. On Thursday, his predecessor was activated to the Bears' active roster.

Former Eagles and Cardinals quarterback Matt Barkley will be on the 53-man roster for Chicago's game Sunday night against the Cowboys. He replaces linebacker Lamarr Houston, who was placed on injured reserve with an ACL injury suffered in Monday night's loss.

Barkley was signed to the Bears practice squad after being waived by the Cardinals at the end of the preseason.

Barkley will back up Brian Hoyer, who was backing up Jay Cutler before the starter left Monday night's game with a thumb injury. Cutler is out for the next two to three weeks.
