Report: 49ers give HC Kyle Shanahan multiyear contract extension

Kyle Shanahan kicked off 2026 with a masterful showing in the 49ers' victory over the Rams in Australia, but it wasn't the only win he scored this year.

The 49ers coach signed a multiyear contract extension with the team in the offseason, ESPN confirmed Friday.

The Ringer's Tom Pelissero first reported the news.

Terms of the deal aren't yet known, but Shanahan's extension represents a deserved reward and sign of stability in San Francisco, where the coach has worked in tandem with general manager John Lynch since both were hired in 2017.

Since the start of their partnership, the 49ers have won three NFC West titles, two NFC championships and have appeared in four conference championship games, rising to the upper crust of the NFL hierarchy.

Shanahan has a record of 83-67 over that span.

Shanahan accomplished what was arguably his greatest feat last season, guiding the injury-ravaged 49ers to a 12-5 finish and a playoff win over the Eagles on Wild Card Weekend.

With that success still fresh in the minds of 49ers ownership, the team decided it was time to reward the coach with additional security. His performance in Week 1 added a cherry on top.

Shanahan previously was under contract through 2027.
