Kevin Kolb or John Skelton? Seems like an easy decision -- except maybe it's not anymore.
With the Cardinals in the middle of a five-game losing streak, it's natural to place a bulk of the blame on the quarterback. In this case, that'd be Kolb, whose 78.8 rating, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions resemble Matt Leinart more than Kurt Warner. Naturally, that's not going over well with Arizona fans.
But is it possible coach Ken Whisenhunt would even consider for a second turning to Skelton? That question was actually posed to Whisenhunt after Sunday's 32-20 loss to the Steelers.
"I'm not saying that," Whisenhunt told the Arizona Republic.
Thank goodness. Frankly, it's a little shocking the question was even asked, but it's understandable -- a reporter simply doing his due diligence.
While it's easy to understand the frustration surrounding Kolb's performance, the Cardinals can't forget that they made a blockbuster trade for him with the longterm future in mind. They've tied their franchise to Kolb, and his leash should be extremely long. Any type of knee-jerk reaction would be detrimental to his development. Heck, being benched for John Skelton of all people just might end Kolb's career.
We hear that if you spend too much time in the desert, your mind can start playing tricks on you. But Whisenhunt can't possibly convince himself that Skelton is a better option than Kolb at any point this season, otherwise what was the point of the trade?
