Wisconsin might not have been playing on its home field, but the Badgers defended a home-state advantage Saturday at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, upsetting LSU 16-14 on the strength of a stingy defense that held Tigers star running back Leonard Fournette out of the end zone.
The junior got his share of yards -- 138 on 23 carries for a 6.0 average -- but the Badgers defense intercepted LSU quarterback Brandon Harris twice and forced seven punts. Wisconsin sealed the win on an interception late in the fourth quarter by CB D'Cota Dixon. Badgers running back Corey Clement -- who entered the game having made his shared stage with Fournette a personal matter -- rushed 21 times for 86 yards and a touchdown.
LSU entered the season opener ranked No. 5 in the nation. Fournette, who is considered among the nation's top candidates for the Heisman Trophy, ran for a first down on his final carry before hobbling off the field with an apparent injury one play before Dixon's interception.
Tigers CB Tra'Davious White sparked a second-half comeback with an interception and a fumble recovery on back-to-back Wisconsin possessions, helping LSU to a 14-13 lead, but a late Wisconsin field goal proved to be the winning points. Wisconsin got 3-for-3 day from field goal kicker Rafael Gaglianone, including a 48-yarder that gave the Badgers a 6-0 lead going into the half.
