What we learned Friday: Offense still in play for Jabrill Peppers

The Michigan Wolverines were at the center of the pro-day universe on Friday, drawing no fewer than eight NFL head coaches, several general managers and a large contingent of NFL scouts representing all 32 clubs to Ann Arbor. Awaiting them were 19 draft prospects who participated in the workout to varying degrees.

A few key points of interest from Michigan's pro day:

1. Offense still in play for Peppers. The general consensus on a future NFL position for versatile Wolverines star Jabrill Peppers is that he'll be a safety. But it's still not unanimous. Peppers said two NFL clubs view things differently, one seeing him as a linebacker and another projecting him as an offensive player, per Nick Baumgardner of the MLive Media Group. Although Peppers had just 45 rushing attempts in his college career, NFL.com senior analyst Gil Brandt sees the offensive potential. Like most teams, Peppers sees himself in the secondary, telling reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine "What do I look like? I'm a safety," but acknowledged there that the subject of playing offense had come up with NFL teams. He played linebacker last season for UM, but also returned kicks and saw occasional action on offense. NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock attended the pro day and thought highly of Peppers' positional work at safety, declaring him a "top-10 pick" after the workout.

2. Charlton runs again. DE Taco Charlton tested in nearly all the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month, but unlike a lot of prospects, he didn't rest on the results there. Instead, he tried to improve upon a 4.92 time in the 40-yard dash and did so with pro-day clockings of 4.83 and 4.85. According to NFL.com senior analyst Gil Brandt, Charlton was also asked to drop into coverage during positional work and helped himself with the workout.

3. Wormley gets his chance. Pro day took on a special importance for DE Chris Wormley, because his combine participation was limited to bench press testing (23 reps). Wormley clocked 40-yard dashes of 4.82 and 4.87 at pro day, along with jumps of 31.5-inches (vertical), 9-2 (broad), and performed agility drills.

4. Star TE on the mend. Wolverines TE Jake Butt couldn't work out Friday as he continues to recover from a torn ACL, but he told Mayock that his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule and he could be ready to play this summer. That's music to the ears of NFL clubs with a draft interest in the John Mackey Award winner.

5. Haley handles WR drills. Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley took a special interest in the Wolverines' two WR prospects, Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh. With catches like this one by Chesson, it's little wonder why. Chesson also opted to time in the 40-yard dash again despite a strong clocking (4.47) at the combine; he was timed at 4.49 and 4.46 on Friday.

6. Lewis improves 40 time. Charlton wasn't the only Wolverine who took pro day as a chance to improve in the 40-yard dash. CB Jourdan Lewis (4.54 at combine) was clocked at 4.45 and 4.47 on Friday, per Brandt.

Here are some things we learned from other pro-day workouts on Friday. One thing to keep in mind: Pro-day testing results tend to be more favorable for prospects than NFL Scouting Combine results.

BYU: Eye-popping numbers for QB Taysom Hill

Big draw: RB Jamaal Williams
Don't forget: LB Harvey Langi
Attendance: At least 28 NFL clubs were reportedly represented at the Cougars' workout.
The skinny: Williams recorded unofficial test results of 4.53 in the 40-yard dash, a 33-inch vertical jump, 18 bench-press reps, a 7.07 3-cone time, and shuttle times of 4.36 (20-yard) and 11.58 (60-yard). ... LB Harvey Langi tested in the 40 with an unofficial time of 4.62. ... QB Taysom Hill, whose BYU career was riddled by injury, reportedly clocked a 4.44 40-yard dash and a 38-inch vertical jump. For a prospect who lists at 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, those are stellar results. The fastest time by a quarterback at the combine (Hill was not invited) was Texas A&M's Trevor Knight (4.54).

Cal: Webb battles rain in throwing session

Big draw: QB Davis Webb
Don't forget: WR Chad Hansen
The skinny: Inclement weather drove Cal prospects indoors for testing, and apparently hampered Webb's passing display, as well. Webb said Friday that at least 10 NFL clubs have told him he's a first-round talent. ... Hansen reportedly ran an unofficial 4.42 40-yard dash, while super-speedy RB Khalfani Muhammad turned in a 4.35 in the 40, per the school, and reportedly measured a 38.5-inch vertical jump.

Also in action Friday: Akron, Arizona, Kent State, Memphis, Missouri Western, Utah State.

On deck for Monday: Appalachian State, Cal-Poly, Houston, Monmouth, Morgan State, Rice, Villanova.*
