Ward (ankle), Farrior (calf) won't suit up for Steelers in Week 8

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without wide receiver Hines Ward when they face the New England Patriots on Sunday, according to a team source.

The Steelers later confirmed, via Twitter, the Ward and also linebacker James Farrior will not play.

Ward, who didn't practice all week, officially was listed Friday as questionable with a sprained ankle. He denied speculation that he was battling a high ankle sprain this week, pointing out that he wasn't using a walking boot. Nevertheless, the Steelers won't have their most dependable possession receiver in Week 8.

Emmanuel Sanders will take Ward's place in the lineup.

Farrior had been listed as questionable but will be sidelined by a calf injury. Stevenson Sylvester will start in Farrior's place.

The Patriots placed cornerback Ras-I Dowling (hip) on season-ending injured reserve Saturday, and activated running back Kevin Faulk. Linebacker Jerod Mayo and Sebastian Vollmer -- neither of whom have played in over a month -- made the trip with the team and were active.
