Vick Ballard likely suffered torn Achilles at Colts camp

Another terrible setback for Vick Ballard.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reports, per a source close to the player, that the Indianapolis Colts believe Ballard suffered a torn Achilles tendon in practice Friday. The running back will undergo tests to confirm the diagnosis. Ballard is almost certainly headed toward surgery and the season-ending injured reserve list.

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen had the first report.

The Colts' official website reported earlier Friday that Ballard collapsed to the turf after catching a pass in practice. Ballard was unable to put any pressure on his injured leg as he was helped off the field before being carted to the locker room.

Ballard had made his return to the field after most of his 2013 season was wiped out by a torn ACL. He was expected to have a significant role in a backfield that includes Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw. Richardson was held out of practice Friday as a precaution.

Other running backs on the roster include Daniel Herron and Chris Rainey.
