Vanderbilt's Wesley Johnson draws first college holding call

Vanderbilt left tackle Wesley Johnson, a senior who has experience at four of five positions on the Commodores' offensive line, was flagged for holding last week for the first time in his college career.

He made 42 consecutive starts and played a whopping 169 consecutive quarters without drawing a holding call before the first flag flew in the second quarter of a runaway win over UAB. Johnson, of course, wasn't happy about it, but he got some ribbing in the huddle from his teammates to lighten his mood, according to dnj.com. Johnson said a "technical error" in his play led to the flag.

Vandy offensive line coach Herb Hand made note of Johnson's impressive streak in the preseason.

"My wife said it was my fault because I'm the one who advertised it initially," Hand said. "What people have to realize is it's 169 quarters without a holding penalty. And not just playing 169 quarters, but 169 quarters as a starter in the SEC. I wanted him to go his whole career without getting one."

Johnson is considered a fringe NFL prospect whose versatility at center, guard or tackle could help his case to make a living in the NFL.
