USA Football Month: Big Ten aims messages at youth coaches

By Bill Bradley, contributing editor

The Big Ten Conference was one of the first college football conferences to adopt the Heads Up Football program.

That's no coincidence as Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald was one of the architects of Heads Up Football and is on the program's advisory committee.

That interest has spread throughout the Big 10. For the past two years, conference coaches have filmed videos about the importance of the Heads Up Football program.

A group of Big Ten coaches filmed the latest videos for Heads Up Football two months ago, aiming their content at youth coaches. They provided advice on subjects varying from intensity of practices to excitement to organization of drills.

As part of USA Football Month, NFL Evolution presents the latest Big Ten videos.

In June, Fitzgerald talked about the importance of football and how it has helped him:

Fitzgerald also talked about young players finding their voice on the field while fitting into the framework of a team.

Also in June, Illinois coach Tim Beckman discussed the importance of being excited to play and coach football.

Ohio State offensive line coach Ed Warinner discussed in June the importance of matching up body sizes in coaching youth football.

Warinner said he tries to vary the intensity of practices throughout the week to keep his players friesh.

Warinner also said the most important thing about coaching offensive linemen is teaching fundamentals.

In May, Indiana coach Kevin Wilson discussed the importance of being competitive and bringing excitement to the field.

Purdue coach Darrell Hazell emphasized the importance of youth coaches scheduling their contact drills as far out as a month ahead of time.

Last year, Big Ten head coaches filmed a series of videos that supported the Heads Up Football program. Those videos, which can be seen by clicking here, were shown during Big Ten home games and on the Big Ten Network.
