Texas is making a change at the top of its athletic department.
UT President Gregory L. Fenves has accepted the resignation of athletic director Steve Patterson, calling it a "mutually agreed upon decision." Fenves said "this has been a decision that's been building over recent weeks."
Fenves also confirmed Tuesday that former Texas linebacker Mike Perrin, who played for the team in the 1960s, will serve as interim athletic director, per the San Antonio Express-News. Former Longhorns coach Mack Brown is not being considered for the permanent AD job, according to the Austin American-Statesman. Brown told ESPN he's happy with his role as an analyst for the network and has "had no discussions" with anyone about the AD job.
Patterson served as AD for 22 months, during which he faced criticism and battled what The American-Statesman described as "the perception that his cool demeanor simply does not fit UT's style." Longhorns fans have also complained about higher ticket prices under Patterson as the football team has been mired in mediocrity. A plane carrying a "Patterson Must Go" banner flew over Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium prior to the Longhorns' game against Rice on Saturday.
Word of Patterson's job potentially being in jeopardy surfaced in the summer, and intensified leading up to his departure on Tuesday.
