The Matt Schaub roller-coaster rages onward.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network's "NFL GameDay Morning" that the Houston Texans starting quarterback won't be the starter for long if his troubles continue Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.
Texans sources told Rapoport that Schaub's job is at risk after coach Gary Kubiak very nearly replaced him with backup T.J. Yates during the week. Schaub has thrown nine interceptions on the year, with a pick six in a league-record four straight games. If the turnovers continue, it's simply "not fair" to Schaub's teammates to keep him in, Rapoport was told.
NFL Media columnist Michael Silver was informed by team sources that Schaub's benching could come at any time -- even in-game -- and on a permanent basis. The Texans (2-3) have a flood of confidence in Yates after he stepped up and won the backup job over rookie Case Keenum in training camp.
Bottom line: Schaub needs a sterling performance against the Rams. Kubiak has gone out of his way to show respect for his veteran passer, but the rest of the 53-man roster must be considered. The Texans, after all, were viewed as a Super Bowl contender before this campaign unraveled.
To be fair, Schaub -- outside of a handful of disastrous throws -- has played rather well this season. But that wasn't the case against the San Francisco 49ers, and he's quickly losing the perception game in the Lone Star State.
