'Sunday Night Football' is top show on TV

In news that undoubtedly led to Cris Collinsworth busting out his signature Cris Collinsworth Smirk™, NBC's "Sunday Night Football" telecast is television's No. 1 show.

The NFL said Thursday that "Sunday Night Football" averaged the most prime-time viewers during the official 2011-12 television season, which ended Wednesday night. The games on NBC averaged 20.9 million viewers, beating out "American Idol," the FOX juggernaut that slipped a bit in its 412th 10th season.

(That thud you heard was a furious Jennifer Lopez pushing one of her handlers out of a moving Fiat 500.)

Yes, we all know that NFL football is a remarkably popular property, especially in 21st-century America. But what's notable here is that this is the first time a sports series was the most-watched prime-time show for an entire television season.

Technological innovation in recent years has given the public a slew of different ways to consume media, but the best way to enjoy NFL football on Sunday night remains, it seems, sitting on your couch with a bowl of potato chips.

Who else wishes they could be there right now?
