Before we get to this week's picks, I want to tell you about a great new co-worker of mine. His name is David Carr. He was the first overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. He played 11 years in the league. He's become an immediate star as a football analyst, he's a very nice fella personally, and he's considered quite handsome by those in the know. (He's also got a famous younger brother.)
For all those virtues, though, his recent list of the five best quarterbacks of all time caught my eye ... and not 'cause I think he got it right. Take a look for yourself:
Neither Joe Montana nor Tom Brady cracks the top five? Holy sheesh!
Because I'm a generous soul, however, I'm willing to forgive the omission of Montana. David, after all, is too young to have seen Joe Cool in his prime -- which is a common issue when it comes to evaluating "all time." More often than not, lists like Carr's are more accurately described as "the best I've seen." (It doesn't explain Brady's absence, but let's not get bogged down right now.)
The silver lining here is, David has delivered a powerful reminder to your beloved master lister (me!) that these rankings change each generation. They're constantly evolving as new information (or, more accurately, new high-end QBs) force their way into the conversation. With that said, I introduce my new three-part ranking approach ...
