Washington Redskins running back Ryan Torain made a limited return to the field on Wednesday after being sidelined the last 13 days with a broken left hand suffered in practice.
The *Washington Post* reported that Torain, who had four screws inserted in the top of his hand, fielded punts and caught passes from one of the team’s trainers. He is listed as day-to-day and is unlikely to play in Friday's game against Indianapolis.
Torain rushed for 742 yards on 164 carries last season in just 10 games. He was drafted in the fifth round by the Broncos in 2008, when Redskins coach Mike Shanahan was still running the show in Denver. He played sparingly in Denver but was thought to be the main man in D.C. until the Redskins signed former Cardinals running back Tim Hightower this summer. Torain's injury would appear to have set him back in the competition with Hightower for the starting role.
The Post also reported Wednesday night that the Redskins have claimed linebacker Thaddeus Gibson off waivers, citing a person with knowledge of the situation.
Gibson, a second-year player out of Ohio State, had been cut by the San Francisco 49ers. Washington, Chicago and Pittsburgh put in claims for him, but Washington ranked highest on the waiver priority list by virtue of having the worst record of the three last season, according to the Post.
