Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett will miss between two and three weeks following surgery for a cartilage issue, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, though there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
When he returns, he could do so with a contract extension.
Long considered one of the most undervalued players in the NFL, Bennett is currently playing on the four-year, $32 million deal he signed back in 2014. In that time, he's logged 20 sacks, 80 tackles and three forced fumbles without missing a start. According to Rapoport, Bennett's representatives and the Seahawks have been discussing a new deal.
While the surgery will force him to miss his first regular-season games as a Seahawk, Bennett is as sturdy as they come. Seattle's complex defense hinges on his ability to get to the quarterback.
Pete Carroll and Co. will hope that his recovery falls on the quicker side. Seattle is currently in a brutal stretch of games that includes Buffalo, New England and Philadelphia after this weekend's matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
